Florida’s New Laws Set Civics Literacy, Fight Communism

It’s a big day in the nation’s Capitol. Infrastructure and policing legislation are on the table. They’re two of President Joe Biden’s major bipartisan priorities—and the next 24 hours could be crucial. Senators on both sides of the aisle say they’ve reached an agreement on the infrastructure plan. Biden told reporters Thursday, “We have a deal.” As for gun control, Biden is cracking down on gun violence. He had a message for those committing the crimes: “My message to you is this: We’ll find you, and we’ll seek your license to sell guns. We’ll make sure can’t sell death and mayhem on our streets.”

Vice President Kamala Harris is heading to the U.S.–Mexico border on Friday. It will be her first visit to the border after being tasked with dealing with the migrant crisis, amid mounting pressure for her to visit it. Last Thursday, more than 50 House Republicans urged President Joe Biden to replace Harris on her border assignment. They cited the fact that she hadn’t yet visited the border.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin denies that the military teaches critical race theory in a hearing before Congress. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley then defended teaching it in the military. This comes as students in Florida are to learn the evils of communism in their civics course and will have to complete a civics test to graduate. The state is strengthening its civic education, with new requirements for an integrated curriculum.
